Ghosts of Cornwall

If you have ever stayed in a Cornwall holiday cottage or Inn you will have almost certainly come across some of Cornwall’s ghost stories. In fact, Cornwall is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in the UK. Read on to find out why.

As Cornwall has been referred to as one of the most haunted regions in the British Isles we thought we ought to prepare you for some of spectres you might encounter during your stay in one of our Cornwall holiday cottages.

The Ghost of Duporth Manor
One of the most well-known ghosts to haunt Cornwall can be experienced in St Austell not too far from our Cornwall holiday cottage. The ghost of a nun who is known only as Flo is said to haunt the place where Duporth Manor once stood. The Manor has been destroyed and replaced with a holiday village but Flo is still around. For the past century there have been reports of things moving and starting without human aid from kettles to children’s roundabouts.

The Talland Ghost Hunter
In a small village situated between Polperro and Looe, not far from our luxury Cornwall holiday cottages called Talland lies the legend of the Talland ghost hunter.  Talland’s vicar, Parson Richard Dodge served the church between 1713 and 1747 and during that time acquired a reputation as an efficient Ghost hunter. As the whole area was well known for having smuggling connections many believe that the activities of ghost hunting were used as a cover for smuggling activities. By circulating stories of ghosts in certain areas he was able to carry out his illegal smuggling runs knowing that he was unlikely to be spotted by other villagers.

The Ghost of Charlotte Dymond
For around a century and a half since her murder Charlotte Dymond’s spirit has been at unrest. Charlotte’s body was found on the slopes of Roughtor, the site of an ancient village near Camelford north Cornwall and she has been witnessed near the site of her murder, wearing a red shawl and silk bonnet many times since. Interestingly her lover, a crippled farmhand called Matthew Weeks was hanged for her murder although it seems doubtful that he had a hand in her murder.
