If you
decide to rent one a Cornwall holiday cottage from JTJ you will
find a wealth of culture on your doorstep, including the wonderful
St Michael’s Mount.
St
Michael’s Mount captures the romance and magic of the area
surrounding the Cornwall holiday cottage you can rent from us. This
medieval castle and church, located at the top of a craggy island
which is accessible by the causeway when the tide goes out,
provides tourists with a dramatic coastal attraction, not to be
missed.
It is
thought that during the Iron Age St Michael’s Mount was originally
the site of a tin port. However it wasn’t until the fifth century
that the Mount is first recorded as being a place of pilgrimage,
due to the fact that Saint Michael was seen in a vision over the
mount by various groups of people. By 1135 a Bendictine Monastery
was founded on St Michael’s Mount and lasted until Henry VIII’s
dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500’s. The buildings on the
island were built at the same time as the monastery, dating back to
the twelfth century.
During
its long history the Mount has been a priory, fortress, a place of
pilgrimage, finally becoming a private home to the St Aubyn family
in 1659. In 1954 the St Aubyn family formed a partnership with the
National Trust, which led to the grounds being opened up to the
public. St Michael’s Mount has been a well-visited tourist
attraction ever since.
Now
home to 25 residents and with its own church, harbour, restaurants
and gardens St Michael’s Mount is certainly worth a visit. You can
choose to either walk across the causeway at low tide or take a
boat trip across at high tide. On some days you can even see seals
and dolphins in the waters surrounding the Mount.
